Baptism
What is Baptism?
Baptism identifies the new believer with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is an outward sign of an inward change.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures”
Why Do We Participate In Baptism?
It is Biblical. The Bible commands it and Jesus followed it.
It is done at the beginning of Salvation. Almost every believer in the New Testament did it, with the exception of the thief on the cross.
It is beneficial, for you and for others. It is a sign to yourself and others of the new life that you will be living.
It demonstrates that you are a believer. It shows your life is now different, having died to sin and risen to new life.
Who Can Be Baptized?
The Bible is clear that baptism is for the person who has proclaimed Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
In Acts 2:41 we observe that they received the Word and then they were baptized.
In Acts 8:12, 36, & 37 we find they believed, then they were baptized.
Baptism is not Salvation or even essential for Salvation, but is obedience to a command by God concerning our own personal growth process.
Can Children Be Baptized?
Yes, if they are old enough to understand the Salvation process. We do not baptize infants at Mountain View Church. However we do practice child dedication. An infant cannot place their faith in Christ. They cannot make a conscious decision to obey Christ nor do they understand what baptism represents. Sprinkling and pouring is not mentioned in the Bible. They do not illustrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Romans 6:3-4
Child dedication was practiced by Jesus with early parents. It is the act of committing a child to God and promising to pray and raise them in a Godly home.
